Britain’s Prince George marked his 9th birthday on Friday when a photo of him was released beaming ear to ear while sporting baby blue. According to Kensington Palace, the picture was taken this month at an unidentified beach in Norfolk, eastern England, where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge reside as a part of Queen Elizabeth II’s expansive Sandringham estate.

In the photo taken by his mother, Catherine, George, who is third in line to the British throne, is shown grinning widely. The publication of photos, typically taken by the duchess, to commemorate the birthdays of William and Catherine’s children has become an annual tradition. The young royals are normally kept out of the spotlight, but this year, as the country celebrated their great-grandmother’s Platinum Jubilee in June, which marked 70 years of her reign, they went to several public events.

Prince Louis, George’s younger brother, won admirers with his performance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace at the royal family’s traditional Christmas celebration at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Louis was observed making goofy expressions, covering his ears with his hands, waving, and yawning while his mother sought to enforce discipline.

On July 22, 2013, Prince George was born in St. Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London. With the birth of Princess Charlotte in 2015 and Louis in 2018, he became a brother. Most recently, in July, Prince George was spotted at the Wimbledon tennis championship.

Although many British newspapers featured a celebration of George’s birthday, Friday’s headlines were dominated by a more contentious royal story regarding his late grandmother, Princess Diana. In response to “false and malicious” allegations made against Tiggy Legge-Bourke, formerly known as Alexandra Pettifer, to secure an exclusive interview, the BBC announced on Thursday that it would pay “significant damages” to the former nanny of Prince William and Prince Harry.

The interview from 1995 where Princess Diana herself spoke candidly about her marriage has been criticized by William and Harry, while Bashir has since left the BBC on health grounds. Charles Spencer, Diana’s brother, tweeted his appreciation for the development on Thursday, saying: “While I’m glad to see that another innocent victim of this horrible tragedy is being vindicated, it’s remarkable to me that no criminal charges have been put against those involved.”

The interview was “a result of the deceitful tactics used by the BBC,” a statement from BBC Director General Tim Davie acknowledged Thursday. “I would like to take this opportunity to apologize publicly to Pettifer, to The Prince of Wales, and to the Dukes of Cambridge and Sussex, for the way in which Princess Diana was deceived and the subsequent impact on all their lives. According to Davie, the BBC let down Diana, the royal family, and the public. He continued, “I have determined that the BBC will never again air the program; we also will not license it in whole or in part to other stations.”
