On Friday, in London, the 9th birthday of Britain’s Prince George was celebrated with the release of a photo showing the young prince beaming.

According to Kensington Palace, the photo was taken this month at a beach in Norfolk, in eastern England, where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have a home apart of Queen Elizabeth II’s Sandringham estate.

Prince George is third in line to Britain’s throne. He’s seen with a toothy grin in the image taken by his mother, Duchess Catherine.

It’s become an annual tradition for birthdays of children of William and Catherine to be marked by the public release of photographs. royals are usually kept away from the public eye, but this year, Britain celebrated their great-grandmother’s Platinum Jubilee in June, marking 70 years of her reign.

Prince Louis, George’s younger brother, captured hearts and international headlines after his emotional display on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. He was seen pulling cheekily pulling faces, waving, and yawing while the Duchess tried to administer order.

Prince George was born on July 22, 2013. Reporters waited outside London’s St. Mary’s Hospital in Paddington to see the royal couple’s firstborn child and heir. George is formally known as Prince George of Cambridge. Later in 2015, he became a brother with the birth of Princess Charlotte and then Prince Louis in 2018.

George’s birthday was celebrated on the front page of many British newspapers. A story about his late grandmother, Princess Diana, also dominated Friday’s coverage.

On Thursday, BBC said it’d pay “substantial damages” to the former nanny of William and Prince Harry, Alexandra Pettifer, over “false and malicious” claims made against her, including the fact that she had an affair with Princes Charles and an abortion, apart of a BBC journalist Martin Bashir’s attempt to obtain an interview.

The BBC interview was aired in 1995. It stunned the world for its insight into Diana’s marriage with Prince Charles. Years later, an investigation concluded that Bashir used fake documents and “deceitful behavior” in the meeting that led to the interview.

BBC Director General, Tim Davie, said BBC had let Diana, the royal family, and audiences down. As a result, he added “I have decided that the BBC will never show the program again; nor will we license it in whole or part to other broadcasters.”
