W.N.B.A star Brittney Griner was arrested in Moscow, on February 17th, 2022. Recently released photos of her have given us hints about her well-being and how she feels. Some have even called the photos “heartbreaking.”
She was arrested at an airport, where she was detained by security for having vape cartridges with hashish oil in her luggage. If she is guilty, Brittney faces a sentence of up to 10 years at a settlement, which is usually at a remote place, such as an island. This is to separate prisoners from the general population.
Cherelle Griner, Brittney’s wife, can only communicate with Brittney using letters. After 4 months of only letters back and forth, Russian officials approved a call between the two for June 18th. But they were unable to connect because the phone line at the U.S. Embassy in Russia was not staffed.
“She’s telling me she’s OK,” Cherelle said in a recent radio interview with the Rev. Al Sharpton. She said Brittney Griner had vowed, “I won’t let them break me.” But Brittney is struggling, Cherelle’s wife said. “She’s a human, she’s there terrified, she’s there alone,” she said. “It’s not just that she can’t speak to her loved ones. She can’t speak to anyone because she doesn’t speak the language. It’s inhumane on all types of levels.”
Some photos of Brittney that were released on Monday also came out with a video that showed her flanked by four officers and a police dog, walking down a hill and then up a flight of stairs.
These images of Griner were the first ones that surfaced since May 13th when an Associated Press Photographer took a picture of Brittney coming out of a courtroom. That day, she wore an orange sweater and kept a hood pulled over her head.
Even though Griner is handcuffed in these new photos, she stays strong and towers over her guards, radiating confidence. Still, the photos produce more questions in the United States about Brittney’s well-being.
