For as long as Bostonians can remember, the third Monday in April is a very special day. Officially it’s Patriots’ Day to celebrate the Revolutionary War; however, in Boston, it is also Marathon Monday.

On the day of the Boston Marathon, the oldest marathon in the world, many runners come together and run a hefty distance. Patriots’ Day is very special because it commemorates the beginning of the American Revolution.

It’s also a very special day for the Boston Red Sox because the team must get up early around 9:00 AM to play a game at 11:00 AM; this is the earliest game in the MLB all year. This way, once the game is done, Red Sox fans can go and watch the end of the marathon, which ends about a mile from Fenway Park.

The Boston Marathon means very much for everyone who is involved, from the Red Sox players to the thousands of people who are lined up along the 26.2-mile course to cheer on their friends and some people they don’t even know.

The Marathon began in 1897, but in 2013, two terrorists bombed the finish line of the marathon, killing three people. Then, they tried to catch them and killed two more. What happened left the city shocked. The Red Sox put the city on their backs and put together an inspiring season, ending with the 2013 World Series championship.
