Almost every kid with a younger sibling knows this: the high pitched and sing-songy tone that your parents use when they are talking to your baby brother or sister. The strange tone that parents use actually has a reason behind it.

Researchers have found that “Parentese” actually exists in the whole world. More than forty researchers gathered thousands of recordings of parents talking to their children. With more than eighteen languages from six continents, all of them had the same “Parentese” tone.

The results were published in the Nature Human Behavior journal, describing the parents talking differently to their baby than to other adults and kids who are older.

Psychologists have said that adults make their voices higher without even realizing. This is because it has a use independent of our social and cultural forces. Sound is used as a form of communication not just for humans, and animals too. Our tone can convey our emotions and Parentese may be a form of showing our emotions.

It is also revealed that the tones people can help create developmental and evolutionary functions. Parents has also been proven to help children remember words better and pronounce words.

This is yet strange but fascinating, and many scientists are working to discover more about this.
