Para Sports Take Center Stage in 2026 Commonwealth Games
“Glasgow 2026 will be an incredible Games. Packed full of medal moments, a brilliant platform for Para Sport, and a thrilling programme of sport across ten-days. From the very first session to the last, Glasgow 2026 will deliver stand out moments to packed venues, creating sporting memories for spectators across the Commonwealth,” said Phil Batty OBE, the Chief Executive of Glasgow 2026.
Next year’s 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games’ schedule was revealed on July 31st, and will be centered on para sports. 3000 athletes from across 74 nations will compete in 10 sports and 6 para sports, with over 200 medals waiting to be claimed. For the first time in Commonwealth Games’ history, para powerlifting will take first medal in the competition. It will also have the most medals for para sports ever during a Commonwealth Game.
Para athlete Olivia Breen, who won the T38 100m dash Gold in 2022, is excited about this huge moment for para sports.
“I love the Commonwealth Games as it is the only competition where the able bodied and para athletes are together and it’s always so supportive and has such a positive vibe,” said Breen.
The Commonwealth Games are a bit like the Olympics, but only 56 countries participate. Just like the Olympics, it is also held every four years, and has a para sport program, established in 2002, where athletes with disabilities can compete in the same events as non para sport athletes.
Katie Sadleir CZNM, CEO of Commonwealth Sport adds, “The release of the Sport Schedule is another exciting milestone for Glasgow 2026, which will deliver an unforgettable celebration showcasing the best of the Commonwealth’s athletes. This refreshed and focused programme reflects the evolving spirit of the Games – more inclusive, more events in many sports and just as inspiring. It’s a major step forward as we build towards another landmark moment for Commonwealth Sport.”
