UNFORGETTABLE PARA SPORTS TAKE PLACE AT 2026 COMMONWEALTH GAMES
By Sophia Wang
More than 200 medals are on the line with 3000 athletes competing from 74 nations. 10 sports, 6 para sports, and 1 epic game.
From July 23rd to August 6th, the Commonwealth Games, an international sports contest, will host participating athletes who compete in different sports. The game is held every 4 years and includes 56 different countries, like Australia, Canada, India, and South Africa. These games are a little like the Olympics, but they are only for Commonwealth countries.
Athletes with disabilities can still compete in the same events, such as para swimming and para powerlifting. The Para Sports have allowed people with disabilities to compete in events that only able-bodied people could. This way para-athletes can play along with athletes despite their disabilities. Para sports are so important for people with different body abilities. The Commonwealth Games provides opportunities for all athletes to compete and feel included.
There is going to be a record number of events for para-athletes at the Glasgow 2026 game. There will be 47 separate medals and six different para sports , making it one of the biggest Commonwealth Games ever held! Olivia Breen, an athlete runner, thinks that this moment will be a big one for the para sports. She said, “It is a huge moment for the para sport, with the largest medal program in Commonwealth history, with 47 medals available across six sports.I love the Commonwealth Games s it is the only competition where the able-bodied and para athletes are altogether and it’s always so supportive and such a positive vibe,”
Some sports events in the Commonwealth Games include:
– 3×3 basketball and 3×3 wheelchair basketball
– artistic gymnastics
– Athletics and Para athletics (Track and Field)
– Bowls and Para Bowls
– Boxing
– Cycling track and Para cycling track
– Judo
– Netball
– Swimming and Para swimming
– Weightlifting and Para powerlifting.
The games will also take place in four venues: Scotstoun Stadium, Stollcross International Swimming Stadium, Emirates Arena
and the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, and the Scottish Event Campus (SEC), including The Hydro, and SEC Armadillo.
