The Strike of the Pacific Tsunami

On July 29th, 2025, a tsunami hit a coastal area in Russia, which then led to an 8.8 magnitude earthquake off the Kamchatka Peninsula. But a few hours later, it hit places such as California, and Hawaii. Many warnings were given to the people who live on the western coast of the United States, to look out for this tsunami and get to the HighGround. The whole Pacific Ocean has been affected because of this tsunami that was set off by the earthquake.

The earthquake was scaled on something called an earthquake magnitude, a way of measuring earthquakes. The higher number that has been scaled the more destructive the earthquake is, the difference between each number such as 6, and 7 is massive, a magnitude 7 earthquake gives 31.6 times more power than a magnitude 6 earthquake, so imagine what a magnitude 8.8 earthquake could do. That is close to a magnitude 9. To scale how powerful the earthquake in russia was, we can compare it to a magnitude 8.8 earthquake that was called the Ecuador Earthquake. Causing 500-1500 people to die, and many others ending up injured or in hospitals. This earthquake created a tsunami which was so powerful it reached Japan 20 hours later. One quote from Filerma Rayo a survivor of this earthquake said, “During a terrifying five hours trapped in the rubble of my quake-hit restaurant, I almost lost hope.” This quote shows the atrocity that the Ecuador Earthquake brought, and it also shows the potential danger the people who live by the pacific have. Possibly many will be wiped if they don’t get to someplace safe.

Many meteorologists suggested temporarily moving someplace safe, for example someplace high That way they don’t have to be too concerned about being suffocated under the water.

All of these earthquakes and tsunamis could kill thousands and possibly millions. The government suggested multiple alert systems such as NOAA, Weather Radio, FEMA emergency alerts, local sirens, and broadcasts. Another way the government tried helping people is by making small communities figure out an evacuation plan if they have no way of protecting themselves against the tsunami, they also are teaching more children around the area about tsunami safety, that way they can coordinate better with the adults when going off with the plan.
