Researchers have found the oldest Neanderthal cave paintings that have ever been discovered in the La Roche-Cotard cave, located in France. The very distinctive engravings were made up of many dots, lines, and stripes. The artwork is believed to be around 57,000 years old.

Neanderthals were an ancient human species that was mainly located in parts of Asia and Europe around 40,000 to 400,000 years ago. Science How Stuff Works says that Neanderthals had bigger brains than modern humans because they had bigger body sizes. Neanderthal’s chins were smaller than modern humans but the Neanderthal’s noses were quite big. The Neanderthals are believed to make many similar things humans do like bury their dead, cook, and make tools.

The reason why the Neanderthal did these paintings are unknown and it is also unknown what these paintings mean. According to the Smithsonian Magazine, the Neanderthal painted the wall by dragging their fingers across the chalking rock in the cave and pushing them into the cave wall. This method is known as finger fluting and, according to Plos One, after the finger fluting done by the Neanderthal, the cave entrance was completely sealed over by sediment deposits.

Having discovered the first Neanderthal cave paintings like the one in La Roche-Cotard cave located in France, we have made a great improvement in our understanding of human creativity.
