Today in Kenya, one of the world’s best runners, Henry Rono, can only imagine his success. Rono never had an Olympic victory because there were boycotts of the 1976 and 1980 Summer games. But many do believe that during the time that sports got very popular, his 1980 season was one of the best.
Even though he had success that rarely anyone is able to achieve, running 3000 meters, 5000 meters, and 10000 meters, he barely thinks of that. Instead, he thinks his biggest success was finally being able to master English at his community school. He said that academics were his weakness, and sports were his natural ability.
He turned from being a famous runner, to a calm person that liked America. Now he is finally back at his home. He didn’t even want to stay there for a while. He wanted to be running coach, but he was rejected. He expected that he would come back being able to know to be a runner. But, the old person is far more than the forgotten star of running.
Rono had a very bad background. He was not able to walk at the age of six, and after that, his dad died in a tractor accident. His mom barely made enough money, and he had to go in and out of school. He was inspired by a runner who was able to go to the Olympics from a nearby village. He was recruited to the army, but mainly what he did was train. His trainer, Keio, expected him to have at least two gold medals.
Soon, there was going to be another Olympics, but there was a riot about the South African Apartheid Act. America then put limits on foreign over-age athletes, which made the colleges scramble to gather talented athletes from other places.
Rono’s background wasn’t the best, but he could do it. He mainly ate junk food, and his running style wasn’t good. Yet he was determined and kept on going. His coach said that he would tell him what to do, and he would do it.
Soon he had some personal troubles. He was careless with his money and started to over-drink. He had his cash stolen, his money went into bad investments made by con artists.
He started doing things that really poor people would regularly do.
He was invited to be a coach in Mexico. His students were very fond of him and thought he was pretty smart.
But he still didn’t think his English was good enough, so he went back to school. Then he wrote a book, and only one of the 29 chapters said anything about his victories. He was very modest.
He was finally back in his home country in 2019, and he solemnly talks about his victories in America.
