Ivan Fedotov, a Russian hockey player, was taken into custody in Russia on Friday. This was due to suspicion that he tried to avoid serving the one year of military service mandatory for Russians.

Fedotov was the heir to a line of great goalies from Russia. He was recognized as an unparalleled goalie in the league and was signed by the Fighters. Philadelphia’s hockey operations president and general manager, Chuck Fletcher said,”[Fedotov] put a number of strong seasons together in the K.H.L., culminating this year when he captured an Olympic silver medal and a K.H.L. Championship.”

What Fedotov is enduring is similar to what American WNBA basketball player, Brittney Griner, is facing. She was taken in at an airport for alleged carrying of vape cartridges and hash oil. Some theorize that Russia is using Brittney Griner as a way to persuade the United States to support Russia over Ukraine.

Recently, Russia has been a part of many questionable, almost scandalous, acts such as doping violations and having athletes compete at the 2022 Winter Olympics despite being banned from world sport competitions. These athletes were able to compete by classifying themselves under the Russian Olympic Committee.

The zenith of these acts were the war crimes committed during the invasion of Ukraine. One war crime was the airstrike on Mariupol’s hospital which was seen as intentional targeting of civilians and also, in the eyes of the White House, “barbaric.”

Recent events have caused the majority of Americans to see Russia as enemies; over 50 percent more Americans see Russia as an enemy now compared to January. President Biden even said that “the world will not forget that Russia chose needless death and destruction.” With Russia being the impetus of many controversial events in the past few years, they will only build a worse and worse reputation.
