Squishmallows. A fluffy toy that so many people are obsessed with. They are to some, the epitome of cuteness, and receiving one is just pure joy to them. “It’s similar to the feeling of winning at a slot machine,” said Nick, a Squishmallow enjoyer. “I try to ride that high because if the high goes away too quick … I’m at the store again two hours later looking for another one.”
Squishmallows were first an idea of Sunny Cho’s while she worked as a designer at KellyToy. When her manager requested her to create patterns using a flexible, silky fabric Cho had recently acquired, she desired something unique, similar to the Japanese-style plush that had not yet found its way to the United States. Cho developed an egg-shaped plushie with round bellies. She created 12 cute animal designs for the toy, and when they were released during the pandemic, they became a top-selling toy. “There’s a real comfort in squishing them,” toy consultant Chris Byrne said, while noticing how parents eagerly explained to him of the toys’ calming effect during the pandemic, when many children were incredibly anxious. They were are a reasonable price, and parents didn’t mind adding the toys to their cart. Also, each toy has their own name and personality, which shows how detailed the company goes to design their toys and makes the buyers want to have them more. Nadia Lindstrom, who has about 30 Squishmallows, said she got a “sort of sad-looking” one named Shep only because of its bio of being a truck driver that is looking for a travel companion.
The fan base of this type of plushie grew and expanded as much as possible, and there’s even super fans who own more than 200 Squishmallows. Nick, who has about 400 Squishmallows, said he has gone 90 minutes to wait outside at store at 5:30 a.m. to wait for the store to open. “It’s an addiction,” he stated. Carter Kench, who treasures about 430 of these fluffy plushies, says the experience is “something special.”
“I feel like Indiana Jones every time I’m on the hunt,” he stated. Adults love these childish things, perhaps it’s because they never got the chance to have these cute toys in their childhood.
Without a doubt, these cute plushies bring smiles to everyone’s faces, and people are obsessed with them for sure. The toys are a hot-seller, and they are truly incredible. Kellytoy’s Squishmallow plushies’ brand says it has sold more than 100 million of these huggable toys since launch, which makes this furry plushie truly outstanding.
