Officials in New York have stated the city is in a public health emergency on Saturday, July 23, because of the spreading of the monkeypox virus. They are calling NYC the “epicenter” of the disease’s outbreak.
Monkeypox spreads through skin-to-skin contact and sharing towels, bedding, respiratory drops, and clothing. In North America and Europe, it usually spreads through men who have had sex with men, even though officials say it can spread through anyone. The symptoms of the disease are painful rashes that start from the head, then to the rest of the body.
The announcement made by Mayor Eric Adams and Health Commissioner Ashwin Vasan said that as many as 150,000 city residents could be at risk of the monkeypox disease. The declaration that was made will allow officials to issue emergency orders under the city’s health code.
In the two days before, New York Governor Kathy Hochul proclaimed a state disaster emergency declaration. Also, the state health department called monkeypox an “imminent threat to public health.”
On Friday, NYC recorded more than 1,000 cases of monkeypox, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. California had the second most, with 799 cases.
This disease, which was once rare, has now been established in central and western areas of Africa for decades. It wasn’t known that monkeypox could start large outbreaks beyond the continent until May 2022, when there were detected outbreaks in Europe, North America, and other places.
There have now been more than 22,000 cases of monkeypox that have been discovered in almost 80 countries since May 2022, with about 75 deaths due to monkeypox in Africa. On Friday, Brazil and Spain reported deaths that were linked to monkeypox, the first ones that are outside Africa.
This particular outbreak of monkeypox is rarely fatal, and most people who contract the virus will heal within weeks. But the symptoms that it gives are painful while it lasts.
