North Korea has finally opened their borders and allowed ambassadors from China and Russia to visit. This event is extremely important, as it is the beginning of North Korea’s friendship with China and Russia.
“North Korea this week opened its borders to visitors for the first time since the pandemic began, with a clear message: Pyongyang has friends in Beijing and Moscow, despite the U.S.-led efforts to isolate all three.” (Washington Post, 2023) This new decision North Korea has made has had a huge benefit for North Korea. Allowing foreign countries to visit them is a good way to create new friendships and alliances with other powerful nations. Major countries that are at war or may be at war soon may want to ally themselves with North Korea because of its massive army. Currently, the Ukraine and Russia war is an opportunity that North Korea has spotted to help them build their empire.
Russia has been at war with Ukraine for many years. Russia can easily overpower Ukraine, but the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), has helped Ukraine. “… the United States has given Ukraine more than $113 billion in aid.” (Kennedy Senate, 2023) This alone has helped Ukraine win major victories against Russia. Russia, fearing they may lose, tried to ally themselves with North Korea for a potential help with the war in the future. This is a long-term benefit for North Korea, because if they help Russia win the war, they may be able to use Russia to help them in the future. The U.S. is scared about that possibility, so they tried to stop it from happening, which failed.
China is already friends with both Russia and North Korea. Even though they do not have an official alliance, they still have an informal agreement to help each other against the United States. Not only that, but “… China also is helping North Korea by overseeing their 7th nuke test.” (The Diplomat, 2023) If North Korea, Russia, and China all ally with each other, it may be a dangerous situation for NATO and the U.S. if they decide to join in the war between Russia and Ukraine.
The new visit between China, Russia, and North Korea has not decided anything yet, but people are fearful about the future. Until they come to an official agreement, it is unknown how China and Russia will react to North Korea’s propositions.
