One of the most isolated countries in the world is finally opening its borders. North Korea just received a visit from China and Russia. The delegations’ visits came as Beijing and Moscow drew closer to Pyongyang in an effort to limit the United States’ influence in the region. Since the failure of US-North Korean diplomatic negotiations in 2019, China has made a strategic approach to Pyongyang. Meanwhile, Pyongyang has become a vociferous backer of Moscow, even declining to criticize Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as one of five countries to do so.

According to Pyongyang’s official report, Russia and North Korea pledged to strengthen their “militant friendship and cooperation” to “cope with the everchanging regional and international security environment.” Shoigu read a greeting speech issued by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“On the occasion of this event, North Korea, China and Russian solidarity is highlighted,” Wi, who was the South Korean ambassador to Russia, stated of this week’s gathering. “…

China and Russia are sort of enablers for North Korea to go ahead with the nuclear and missile program. … That’s very much worrisome and frustrating.” In 2018, a higher-ranking Chinese official, Li Zhanshu, visited North Korea to commemorate the anniversary, implying that Beijing may be downplaying the relationship this year. In their coverage of the visit, Chinese official media stressed the ties between the communist parties of the two nations. Li, vice chairman of China’s National People’s Congress Standing Committee, visited North Korea since the outbreak began, serving as Communist Party secretary in key economic sectors. He sent a handwritten letter from China’s top leader, Xi Jinping.

But to the shock of most individuals, North Korea, one of the most isolated countries in the world, opened its borders and accepted the visit of others. North Korea’s reopening to delegations last week fueled speculation about whether the country is preparing for a full border reopening. However, state media reports have not indicated whether any policy changes are on the way. But North Korea accepting visitors that encourage them to launch and test their weapons is still concerning for America and their allies at the end of the day.
