During the last week of July, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un welcomed Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chinese Politburo member Li Hongzhong into the country, opening its border for the first time after the pandemic started. This meeting signified that Russia and China stand by North Korea’s side despite of the nuclear and weapons buildup. It also confirmed that North Korea is slowly opening its door to other countries.
The participation of Chinese and Russian representatives in the “Victory Day” parade this year, which is what North Korea calls to commemorate the 1953 Korean armistice, has made experts think that China and Russia are standing in solidarity with it.
“The two political parties and countries have a history of friendly interaction,” spokeswoman Mao Ning said during a press conference. During her speech, she mentioned that a significant Chinese delegation visiting North Korea reflects the strong value both sides place on their relationship.
China’s recently appointed ambassador to North Korea, Wang Yajun, was also present at the anniversary celebration. This event is also notable because Wang is likely the first foreign diplomat to be officially recognized in Pyongyang since the pandemic began.
