Ryan Kerrigan, former Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles player reluctantly ends his NFL career after being in the league for 11 seasons.

Ryan Kerrigan is from Muncie, Indiana, and played for Purdue University for college football as a defensive end. He was picked in the 1st round by Washington in the 2011 NFL draft. He rose to promise and played on the team until 2020. He signed a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, and played for them in the 2021 season.

On Friday, Kerrigan announced that he was quitting due to his injuries. His doctors had said his knee is seriously hurt. They encouraged him to end his career months ago, but he felt like he isn’t ready to quit yet. For a period of time, he stopped training. “[I] was like: ‘Oh, my body feels nice! I can do this again,’ ” he said. “It’s like, well, your body feels nice because you haven’t trained for football in two months, so you got to kind of acknowledge the truth there.”

After Kerrgian left, he was flooded with farewells from his former Washington teammates. He returned to Ashburn, Virginia on Friday to visit the Washington Commanders, and he was welcomed with applause by his former teammates. “He’s a guy that always could help set the example. I mean, you only get so many of those guys, and when you get them, they most certainly need to be celebrated.” said Ron Rivera, the Washington Commanders Coach.

He had some time to reflect on his career and think about the amazing plays he has done over the last 10 years, like defeating the Cowboys in 2012, and when he forced a fumble on the Cowboy’s offense in 2018 and his teammate Preston Smith recovered the ball and made a touchdown.
