Trump Sends National Troops to “Stop” Protests
Protests in Los Angeles against Immigration action have continued for a few days, starting from June 6. American President Donald Trump, in response to the protests, dispatched thousands of National Guard troops and hundreds of Marines, to the dismay of the Los Angeles leaders.
The protests started after the ICE agents arrested many undocumented immigrants in an area that allows and even encourages immigration, Los Angeles. These demonstrations first began in downtown LA and then spread quickly throughout the city. These protests started on Friday and continued into the weekend, unable to be stopped by the local police.
After the protests became widespread, Trump first dispatched 2000 members of the National Guard there to help with stopping the protests. Even though the state governor objected to the president’s actions, Trump continued to send another 2000 troops along with 700 Marines to the area.
A federal judge in California ruled that Trump’s actions were illegal in dispatching the troops himself. This has also been was also the first time any president has sent troops into a state without the state’s request in decades, according to CBS news.
Moreover, Los Angeles Governor Gavin Newson and Mayor Karen Bass both have accused Trump of intentionally staging the immigration raids to inflame Californians to “manufacture a crisis in a state that he regards as a hotbed of opposition and a place that allows illegal immigration.” This is especially shown when even after local authorities said that they didn’t need any help from the government, Trump still insisted on sending them thousands of National Guard troops.
Finally, after many days of protests, the protesters got restrained into a 10-block section of the city. With the help of Hydee Felkstein Soto, the Los Angeles city attorney, the demonstrations got under control. By threatening that anyone who “tagged, vandalized, looted, threw rocks, disobeyed police or otherwise disrupted public safety” would be arrested and prosecuted, they further assured that no more significant damage would be done.
