Air India Flight Crash
On June 12, 2025, Flight AI 171 took off from Sandra Vallabhbhai Patel international Airport flying to London Gatwick airport, in the UK. Seconds after liftoff, the aircraft crashed into a medical college in Meghaninagar. There were 242 people on board and 241 people died from the crash. On the ground 38 people were killed and dozens more injured due to the aircraft striking the college.
One passenger, a 40-year-old British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, survived with minor injuries and was able to exit the aircraft and walk away. Emergency services arrived rapidly, including local fire departments, paramedics and army teams. Investigators found out the dual engine failed. There was footage that shows the Ram Air Turbine deploying after takeoff, an automatic backup power and hydro system that activates only when both engines fail.
UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, said the crash was “devastating”. “I am being kept updated as the situation develops, and my thoughts are with the passengers and their families at this deeply disturbing time,” he said. The case of the engine failure is still under investigation by Indian authorities with international teams from the UK.
