By MAGGIE YANG
On June 14, 2025, President Trump held a military parade in Washington, D.C., to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the US Army. However, there was also a protest across the country, where the citizens expressed their opposition to what they see as Trump abusing the powers of the commander–in–chief.
During the parade, seeing featured featuring tanks and military planes, showing off the nation’s strength. Trump watched from a different higher area on Constitution Avenue, where he was surrounded by lots of military leaders and his wife, Melania Trump.
While he was delivering his speech, he emphasized his army’s role in protecting his country, saying, “Time and again, America’s enemies have learned that if you threaten the American people, soldiers are coming for you.”
At the same time, protests were mainly about the name “No Kings,” with about 2000 protests, taking place in cities and towns from place to place. They were protesting Donald Trump’s recent decision to send of sending the National Guard and Marines to help with the immigration enforcement. Many believed these presidential power actions are used in the wrong way, and blur the difference between military and civilian roles.
Even when most of the protests were quite peaceful, but not in Los Angeles. Those fights with police led to the use of tear gas to break up the crowd‘s protest.
Senator Patty Murray criticized Trump, saying, “Threatening to use our own troops on our own citizens at such scale is
unprecedented, it is unconstitutional, and it is downright un-American,”
The estimated price for this parade was $45 million, which has surprised a lot of people. This is especially true because Trump’s administration has cut programs for social programs and help for other countries. Others think this money could be used to help the regular American citizens. The person who started the protest group, Leah Greenberg, said, “We should spend on our communities, not show off military power.”
This event on June 14 not only showed the negative situation in the America society, but also raised questions about the role of the military in everyday life.
