Greenland is a large island located in the North Atlantic Ocean, directly between the Arctic Ocean and the North Atlantic Ocean. Greenland is a self-governing island owned by Denmark who are apart of NATO, (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), which is a political and military alliances formed from countries like Europe and North America. President Trump is trying to take over Greenland for its natural resources, a new shipping route once climate change melts the icebergs, more land added to the U.S., and its current military base already in Greenland. Emmanuel Macron, President of France will visit the island on June 15, to help Europe strengthen its power.
President Macron had accepted an invitation from Greenland’s prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, and the Danish prime minister, Mette Frederiksen. President Macron would discuss the safety in the North Atlantic and the Arctic. Greenland went from being a quiet and less involved territory to becoming a big focus because President Trump kept trying to have the U.S. take over it. Emmanuel Macron believes that President Trump’s actions toward Europe provide a chance for Europe to show its power. For example, when Trump wanted to buy Greenland, Macron believed that Europe could unite and push back.
President Macron will be the first foreign leader to visit the territory of Greenland since Trump is trying to take control of it this year. The vice president of the U.S., JD Vance, had already been to Greenland in March, but the trip got shortened, and instead, he stayed at a remote military base because people might start to protest. It was very clear that Trump’s upcoming visit was meant to show that Greenland is a vast island with lots of resources, and it isn’t something that a country can get possession of.
Earlier this year, France’s foreign minister offered to send troops to help defend Greenland, but Denmark refused. In paragraph eight, it talks about how from June 15 to 17, Macron will stop by Greenland on his way to the meeting in Canada involving the Group of 7 (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.) Trump has also suggested that Canada should be a part of the U.S. as the 51st state. Therefore, President Macron will be visiting the two places Trump wants to take over.
Greenland is commonly known for being a huge island, with a massive population of 56,000 people. The amazing landscape has 31 out of the 34 critical materials, such as lithium and titanium.
President Macron thinks that Europe should be more independent. Trump’s disrespectful attitude has made Macron’s point of view seem more dominant. Macron says, that Europe needs to rebuild its military and stop strongly depending on peace. President Macron strongly agrees with the European Union, but Trump views it as something created to hurt the U.S. Luckily, the G7 meeting will give Macron and Trump to discuss their disagreements which has a chance of growing stronger because of Macron’s trip to Greenland. The trip will show French and European strength.
Back in Denmark, Europe, and Greenland, Trump’s attempt to control Greenland caused lots of anger. A recent poll showed that 85 percent of Greenlanders didn’t want to become part of the U.S.
Trump’s attempt to take control of Greenland caused lots of arguments between the Danish, French, and Americans. President Trump wanted to take over Greenland for its natural resources, a new Arctic shipping route once the ice melts, expansion to the U.S. similar to the Louisiana Purchase or purchasing Alaska, and its location for the military.
