President Trump Passes Travel Bans
President Donald J. Trump passed an immigration ban on twelve countries, which will take effect on Monday June 9, 2025. Trump claims he has done this for the safety of the U.S.A. The specific countries that Trump has banned from immigrating into the U.S. are Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen, according to a BBC News article. This ban means that citizens from those countries will not be allowed to enter the United States without special government approval.
This is not the first time President Trump has passed a travel ban. Trump also passed one in 2017, which featured some of the same countries, namely Iran, Libya, and Somalia. However, the previous law was scrapped by President Joe Biden in 2021, likely prompting President Trump to bring forth another travel ban.
Not only does this law ban immigration by citizens of twelve nations, but a partial ban has been placed on citizens of another seven countries. These seven countries are Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela. This ban provides exemptions for some people, including dual citizens, who are people that have citizenship of two countries, or traveling athletes.
The travel ban isn’t accepted by all, though. Democratic politicians said that Trump’s ban had gone against the ideas and morals of the founders of the United States, since the United States was planned to be an open and fair country.
In addition to some politicians reacting poorly, the people of the United States have too. “Dozens of community leaders and activists gathered in downtown Chicago today to stand up against the Trump administration’s new travel ban,” says NBC news reporter Selina Guevara. This shows how the public is upset about Trump’s actions.
“Raquel Fernandez, a Venezuelan American immigration attorney, said she is worried that she will not be able to see her grandparents again because of the travel ban,” said NBC news reporter Megan Lebowitz. This shows that the ban can sever family connections of people from these countries.
The ban Trump has placed highlights his policy of putting the protection of the U.S.A. first, and remind us that legislative or executive orders will be criticized, and will have a downside.
