Title?
Mrs. Jones recently became the first gay mayor of San Antonio on June 7th. This was a very close election between Gina Ortiz Jones and Rolando Pablos. Mrs. Jones has already run many times, but she has lost. She has considered many things, and being the mayor of San Antonio is something she is proud of.
This election was soon after the Kamala and Trump election. One of Mrs. Jones‘ priorities would be fixing poverty in a small city where nearly 20 percent have lived below the poverty line since the 1980s, according to U.S. census figures. Another thing she wants to fix is to expand early childhood education to more children and increase affordable housing and work programs for unskilled workers. During her campaign, she talked about how she was brought up. Her upbringing was a little hard. She was raised by her mother all alone because her father was a Vietnam veteran. Mrs. Jones has always looked up to how her mother brought her up. I think because of this she became a lot more independent and became a vocal leader.
During the election, she was accused of being racist. She didn’t care and was proud of what her last name was. She was an old military officer. She kept losing on all her campaigns, but she never gave up. For this election, she had more of the votes when the election was starting and ended with the most votes. So, she won the election. However, San Antonio uses a different way to run things/elect. They use a council-manager form of local government, in which the mayor acts primarily as the chairman of the City Council and leaves the day-to-day operation to a city manager. The election was also a test of Latino sentiment after the dramatic shift of Hispanic voters toward Donald J. Trump in 2024.
Mrs. Jones is a great example of why you should always try no matter what. Even through losing a lot of her elections, she never gave up, and she finally got elected as the first gay mayor.
