Gun rights in the U.S. are guaranteed by the country’s founders and held dear by many Americans. But they are becoming a growing issue in the United States with gun violence at an all-time high, as evidenced by numerous mass shootings in the recent years.

Even in the shadow of tragedies like the mass shootings in Uvalde and Buffalo, the six-justice conservative majority on the Supreme Court stood by a broad interpretation of the Second Amendment to “keep and bear arms.”

The supreme court also recently struck down a law in New York requiring residents to prove intent to carry firearms, stating that the rule violates the constitution. Justice Clarence Thomas ruled that Americans have a right to carry firearms in personal defense in public, without having their intent questioned.

This change will greatly impact the safety of many people living around the country. This ruling will affect people in states like New York, California, Maryland, and even Hawaii by no longer allowing officials to decide whether people can carry weapons in public if they pass criteria.

President Biden, who has called gun violence a national embarrassment, said he was “deeply disappointed” by the decision, and said “it contradicts both common sense and the Constitution, and should trouble us all.” The New York governor has also criticized the Supreme Court’s decision, saying it was “outrageous that at a moment of national reckoning on gun violence, the Supreme Court has recklessly struck down a New York law that limits those who can carry concealed weapons.”

More than 390 million firearms are owned by people in the US. And in just 2020, more than 45,000 people died from firearms-related injuries. Many important figures such as the president have called out this action, along with many other people. This change will impact thousands of people living in different states, and has come at a terrible time in the history of the US, and it will continue to threaten the safety of thousands of people in the U.S without any further action.
