NEW TALLEST BRIDGE IN THE WORLD

Workers in China have built a bridge that stretches above the Beipan River in the China Guizhou providence. The bridge is 2,051 feet (625 meters) above the river, beating the Duge Bridge, which was 565 meters.

The Guizhou bridge was built to make traveling easier across the Huajiang Grand Canyon. Guizhou is known for the deep river trenches, steep sinkholes, mountains, and other obstacles it has. These obstacles complicate travel for people passing by the canyon.

The bridge cost almost 295 million dollars to build, and since the height and location of the bridge are dangerous, a lot of steps were taken to ensure safety. More than 400 safety sensors were attached all over the bridge, and 96 trucks were driven on the bridge so workers could test if the bridge was safe. Building the bridge took about 3 years.

The bridge is now part of the Guizhou S57 highway. Before the bridge was built, people who drove between the two sides of the canyon had to take long, winding roads through the big mountains. But now, zooming past the mountains on the bridge only takes a little more than one minute.

Before the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge was built, the Duge Bridge was the tallest bridge in the world. Located on Guizhou’s border, the Duge Bridge was built to connect two provinces together, like the Yunnan province and the Guizhou province.
