On Saturday, July 23, 2022, nearly 1,200 undocumented migrants arrived within Italy by boat in 24 hours.
The undocumented migrants come from different Asian, African, and Middle Eastern nations and landed at ports in Sicily. Officials say 674 people were rescued and five dead bodies were recovered from a fishing boat off the coast of Calabria. Another 15 boats rescued a total of 522 people and brought them to Lampedusa.
According to Italian media, the island’s immigration center has been overwhelmed with a huge increase in landings in recent weeks. The Ansa news agency reports that the center was well over its 350-person capacity, with about 1,184 people currently being held at the site.
