Last week, NASA announced that they have finished testing the SLS moon rocket despite the rocket only making it halfway through its latest countdown test due to a hydrogen leak. Their next goal is launching the rocket by early September.
The hydrogen leak and aborted test caused NASA to question whether they have enough data to proceed with the first-ever launch attempt.
“NASA has reviewed the data from the rehearsal and determined the testing campaign is complete,” the agency said in a statement. NASA will repair the hydrogen leak and prepare the rocket for launch.
NASA’s new SLS rocket has more carrying capacity than its predecessors, allowing NASA to send more and heavier equipment into space. The new SLS rocket is also planned to return astronauts back to the moon.
The new rocket’s launch will send the Orion capsule into an orbit around the moon. It will be followed by a rocket launch that will send the capsule and four astronauts into an orbit around the moon.
The SLS rocket is planned to send the Orion capsule and a space crew to the moon for a landing in 2024. The moon landing will likely be the first time a human sets foot on the moon in over 50 years. The last time a human set foot on the moon was in 1972, on NASA’s Apollo 17 mission.
The SLS rocket will likely be the beginning of a new wave of space exploration and travel.
