At the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean floor, explorers have spotted mysterious patterns of holes. Nobody knows why they are there, or where they came from.
On the ocean floor only a mile from Portugal, north of Azores, scientists spotted a dozen sets of holes making a track. These tracks, found on July 23rd, 2022, were about 1.5 miles below sea level. A week later, more holes were found on the Azores plateau. Scientists are still in confusion about how the holes were created. Dr. Michael Vecchione, a NOAA deep-sea biologist was “a little disappointed” that he couldn’t find an explanation for this mystery.
The first holes were spotted 18 years ago in the Mid-Atlantic ridge, around 6,800 feet from the surface. The holes were named “lebensspuren,” or “life traces” by two researchers.
Now scientists are going to attempt to solve the mystery. Explorers have created an expedition called the Voyage of the Ridge 2022, which started in May, and will end in September. During these 4 months, scientists will complete three expeditions to the bottom of the ocean to find out what is making the holes, collecting sediment samples and find out if aquatic wild life made the holes.
Scientists and researchers have made a few hypotheses on why these holes may exist. One reason could be marine life walking on the sediment, or marine life could be digging and burrowing holes within the sediment. The scientists weren’t 100% sure, so they asked social media to see if the public had any exciting hypotheses. Some responses made sense, others were more silly. “I think it is a minor crack in the surface which allowed gasses to escape,” one Facebook user wrote. Another one wrote, “I would say starfish doing cartwheels,”
