In the US, about 1,800 cases of Monkeypox have been seen, and US health officials say they don’t have enough vaccines to cope with the skyrocketing demand. Not only that, but 1,800 may be an understatement since testing has lagged.
The disease gives rashes that start from the head, then spread to the body. Though it clears up on its own, it can be extremely painful. Most of the cases that have been confirmed are among men who have had sex with men, but anybody can catch the virus.
“We don’t yet have all the vaccines that we would like at this moment,” US Centers for Disease Control director Rochelle Walensky said at a news briefing on Friday. The US has gotten 370 thousand out of about 7 million vaccine doses that the government has purchased. But millions of vaccines are expected to arrive next year.
The federal government has sent out about 156 thousand doses nationwide, and also is going to start shipping another 130,000 doses from Monday. But, earlier this week, New York city’s vaccinations website crashed when thousands of people tried to schedule vaccine appointments at the same time.
New York City Health Commissioner Ashwin Vasan apologized for the patchy roll-out of the vaccine. “We own it. You know, those mistakes shouldn’t happen and so we’re working to correct those and do better,” he said at a news conference.
The US has bought more than 1.1m doses of the monkeypox or JYNNEOS vaccine, produced by Bavarian Nordic in Denmark. Hundreds of thousands more doses are expected to arrive in the US after Health officials said they had completed an inspection of the Danish plant.
More than 12,500 cases of monkeypox have been seen in about 70 countries, according to the US Centers for Disease Control.
