More than 1,800 people have gotten monkeypox in the U.S., but doctors believe that there are more cases because tests are lacking.

Monkeypox is a disease that causes a painful rash that resembles acne and appears on the face and inside the mouth, then spreads to the hands, feet, and chest. The disease is very contagious, but mostly goes away by itself after two to four weeks.

To prevent the spread of monkeypox, people would need to take a vaccine, but the U.S. does not have a large enough supply at the moment. Unfortunately, millions of doses that the US bought are expected to arrive next year. People are trying to sign up on different websites as soon as possible to be safe from monkeypox.

When people have monkeypox, it is important that they stay away from others and not touch anyone, because it’s contagious. Instead, they should stay in a room where they can be quarantined for a few weeks, when the symptoms become invisible. That shows that they no longer have monkeypox.

Many people are trying to get the vaccine from New York City’s vaccination website, but the website crashed because so many people wanted to make appointments. Ashwin Vasan, the New York City Health Commissioner apologized for the crash. “We own it. You know, those mistakes shouldn’t happen and so we’re working to correct those and do better,” he said at a news conference.
