It’s not news that the Minions are extremely popular, but the release of “Minions: The Rise of Gru” made audiences go wild. The movie managed to outshine other anticipated family movies like “Lightyear” and “Jurassic World: Dominion,” and outclassed adult movies like “The Black Phone” and “Mr. Malcolm’s List.”

Initially, most box offices were worried that everyone had moved on from the Minions and Gru. This is because the spinoff was delayed for several years. They were surprised when it took off, making $202.2 million in the three days after its premiere.

What may have helped the most was a viral TikTok trend—#GentleMinions—based on the movie. The trend shows teenagers dressing up in suits, hoodies, and jeans; they bring along bananas (the minion’s favorite food) and then cause chaos. It helped encourage teenagers to watch the movie. As many teenagers grew up watching “Despicable Me,” it helped attract many ages to the theater.

What also helped was the timing. A lot like “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Minions: The Rise of Gru” was held for a long time before released. The studio found the perfect day, precisely three days before the fourth of July.

Finally, the show itself helped make this show so popular. The minions themselves are tiny, banana-yellow that have helped carry the “Despicable Me” films. Their cute and energetic personalities attract many viewers, including meme-makers, families, and people of all ages.

The movie has become a wild success for many reasons. Even though it’s still an only-in-theaters movie, people have come to fill the seats. And with its connection to the famous “Despicable Me,” it took off like a rocket, making the film industry more successful than ever since the pandemic.
