Return of Minecraft’s copper golem
After years of hope and fan requests, Minecraft has finally announced that the long-lost copper golem is coming to the game in a new update this July. The reveal has caused excitement among players around the world, especially those who remember the mob from the Minecraft Live 2021 vote.
The copper golem is expected to be a small, player-crafted companion made of copper, known for pressing buttons and randomly wandering, adding charm and functionality to builds, especially redstone machines. Its quirky personality and mechanical style made it a fan favorite even before it officially existed in the game.
In the past, the copper golem competed against other fan-submitted mob ideas but ultimately lost to the allay, which went on to be added in The Wild update. An allay is a helpful, flying passive mob that hands items to the player. While the allay became a beloved helper, many fans were disappointed the copper golem didn’t get its chance to be in the game. However, four years later, Mojang, the company that made Minecraft, is giving the copper golem its long-awaited debut. “It feels really good that the copper golem is making a comeback,” said Agnes Larsson, Mojang’s Game Director. “When we plan for future updates, we always go back and look at past ideas to see what still fits.”
More fascinating, alongside the golem, Mojang also revealed that copper is becoming a full tool and armor tier, which is the first new gear tier added since the Nether update. “This is a really big and exciting thing,” said Eric Grimsborn, Senior Gameplay Engineer. Copper tools will sit between stone and iron in strength, speed, and durability. “It’s easier for players to find copper than iron,” Larsson explained. “So adding this tier helps smooth out the early game experience and gives players more crafting options.” In addition, a copper pickaxe will mine slightly faster and last longer than a stone one, though it won’t unlock new resources like an iron pickaxe would.
Players using the Bedrock Edition can already test the new features through beta and preview modes, while Java Edition players will have to wait a little longer. Still, with long-requested content finally arriving, the update promises to be an exciting moment for players everywhere. This promising new update will enhance the game experience, and it reflects Mojang’s interest in listening to fan requests.
