On Saturday, June 25th, 2022, twenty-one people were injured and two people passed away from a shooting in Oslo, Norway. The 42-year-old suspect was arrested for murder, and Police are calling it an “act of Islamist terrorism.”

Witnesses recall the murderer taking a gun out of his bag and firing, putting many people in danger. Later, police found two weapons, one of which was a fully automatic gun.

Three different locations were targeted, one of which was a gay bar, and the people of Oslo are speaking up for the fallen citizens. Norway’s prime minister, Jonas Gahr Stoere, described how thousands of Norwegians came together on the streets of the city waving rainbow flags and laying flowers. People on the streets also chanted “We’re here, we’re queer, we won’t disappear!”

Mr. Stoere said, “These misdeeds remind us of this. This fight is not over. It is not safe from dangers. But we are going to win it, together.”

The Oslo Cathedral was decorated with rainbow flags. Norway’s Crown Princess also showed her respect by attending the church service. She brought bright colored flowers and rainbow flags to honor the LGBTQ+ members.

The suspect, Zaniar Matapour, is a 42-year-old Norwegian man. His lawyer, John Christian Elden told the media not to draw any conclusions about the reasons for his actions. Police think it was a hate crime, specifically targeted towards pride.

After the incident, people came together on the streets, chanting “We’re here, we’re queer, we won’t disappear!”
