Professional hurdlers such as Dalilah Muhammad clearly pose a threat to her peers as the 2016 Rio Olympics champion and Tokyo Olympics silver medalist. Who could be brave enough to stand against this daunting competitor, or even more, break their own record? Nonother than the decade younger Sydney McLaughlin.

McLaughlin easily broke the Olympic world record on Friday for the fourth time in two years. Muhammad finished the breathtaking race with a time of 53.13 seconds, Femke Bol of the Netherlands in 52.27, a second with a time of 0.86 seconds. Not only did McLaughlin win gold, but finished with a time of 50.68 seconds, and compared to Bol, a 1.59 difference.

It seemed as if McLaughlin did not show her full potential as her reaction to this win was a simple, “I think we’re all figuring out that, yes, there are 10 barriers, but we can run them a lot faster than people think…[but]I still think that wasn’t even a super clean race.” Having broken both the U.S. Olympics trials and Tokyo Olympics’ records, McLaughlin obviously felt that this wasn’t enough as she beat her record once again. Muhammad on the other hand, who had an automatic bid to world championships, timidly submitted a withdrawal with no further discussion.

McLaughlin has many qualities that sets her apart from other hurdlers – -a combination of work ethic, passion and determination, and support from coaches. She is one of the successes that will be looked up to and influenced by her dedication, one that will an athlete to look out for.

When asked of her decisions for the following course of the future, McLaughlin simply said that she would continue to compete in 400 or 100-meter hurdles, as like she said, there is always more room for improvement. “My coach thinks there’s a lot more to be done,” she said. And it’s obvious that she thinks so too.
