The famous book Matilda by Roald Dahl is getting another movie musical made, released in the UK around Christmas time.
Matilda, the main character, will be played by 11-year-old Alisha Weir, and James Bond Actress Lashana Lynch will be playing Ms. Honey, the kind-hearted teacher. Emma Thompson, best known for playing the wondrous Nanny McPhee, will be playing the Headteacher Mrs. Trunchbull.
This version of the film is based on Matilda: The Musical originally staged in Stratford-Upon-Avon. The stage show is known for songs such as “a Little Bit Naughty” and “When I Grow Up.” The show won 7 Oliver awards, one of the top prizes in the theater world. Another version of the show opened on Broadway in New York, winning 5 Tony awards.
In the film, we follow Matilda, a supernatural child. At the age of one-and-a-half, she develops perfect speech. She can also read perfectly by the age of three. Eventually, in class, she figures out she can move things with her mind. After finding out the truth about Headteacher Trunchbull, Matilda steps up and uses her newfound power to help her teacher, Miss Honey.
The trailer shows us Matilda and her friends facing Headmistress Trunchbull, very similar to the main plot of the movie. But the musical movie won’t exactly be the same as the original movie. We still will be able to see some classic scenes such as the Chocolate cake incident and the throwing of the child in the playground.
Will this new musical for “Matilda” be a success, or will it be a big failure? We’ll just have to wait and see!
