Yesterday, over 1,200 migrants from Asia, Africa, and Middle Eastern nations landed at the ports of Sicily by boats. According to officials, 674 people were rescued, and five dead bodies were recovered from an overcrowded fishing boat off the coast of Calabria. Another 522 people rescued from some 15 boats were brought to Lampedusa on Saturday.

The rescued individuals from these boats hail from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sudan, Ethiopia, and Somalia.

The Mediterranean is an extremely dangerous route as over 3,231 people were recorded dead or missing in the Mediterranean and the northwest Atlantic in 2021.

Many migrants cross the Mediterranean in makeshift vessels supplied by people smugglers. The landings of many migrants came before the Italian election, which may help them gain more votes in this election. As the party’s leader, Giorgia Meloni, was known for advocating for a blockade of the Libyan coast to stop people smugglers from launching to the Italian coast.
