In Malaysia, on the Friday of the Good Vibes Festival, Matty Healy, lead singer of the British band The 1975, was performing with his band. He kissed his male bandmate, bass player Ross MacDonald, slamming a variety of anti-gay laws to try and defend the rights of the lesbian and gay community.

Malaysian Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil criticized Matty Healy’s conduct at the start of the Good Vibes Festival as “very rude.” He met with the festival organizers on Saturday, and the rest of the festival, which was scheduled to go on that weekend, was canceled. In a statement on Facebook, Fahmi said that “there will be no compromise with any party that challenges, belittles or violates Malaysian laws.” In Malaysia, homosexuality is considered a crime that can get you up to 20 years in prison.

Before kissing Ross MacDonald, Healy used swear words in his speech criticizing the government’s stance against homosexuality. The agency that oversees foreign artists’ performances expressed dissatisfaction with the band’s behavior. The band is now blacklisted from performing in Malaysia as a result of insulting the law. This occasion was not the first time Healy defended homosexuality. An alleged kiss between him and a male fan took place during one of his concerts in the United Arab Emirates in 2019. The UAE is a country that also outlaws homosexual acts, according to media reports. A video of the incident was posted on social media and ignited backlash in the mostly Muslim nation.
