LONGEST LIGHTNING STRIKE EVER RECORDED IN AMERICA

On October 22, 2025, a lightning flash set a record for the longest
lightning strike in American history. The bolt stretched a staggering 515 miles ( 829
kilometers ), beating the previous record of 477 miles ( 768 kilometers ). It crossed 5 states, including Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas,
and Missouri. Even though the lightning strike happened in October of 2017 the full length wasn’t confirmed until July, 2025. This is according to the World Meteorological Organization ( WMO ).
The new record is an exciting, and frightening, reminder of how powerful mother nature is.
