Last Tuesday, the Los Angeles Sparks announced they were going to have a “contract divorce” with 30-year-old center Liz Cambage. As the sixth-best team in the WNBA with a record of 12-18, they are now looking for a star player to rebuild around.

“It is with the support that we share Liz Cambage’s decision to terminate her contract with the organization. We want what’s best for Liz and have agreed to part ways amicably. The Sparks remain excited about our core group and are focused on our run towards a 2022 playoff berth,” said Sparks Managing Partner Eric Holoman.

In 25 games this season, the 6’8” Australian center averaged 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks. She is a very accomplished scorer; In 2018 she set the WNBA record for 53 points in one game. However, recently, her stats have gone downhill, as she is currently in a scoring drought. Her 13 points per game this season are the second lowest of her career.

This is her 3rd split in 5 years. Cambage’s WNBA career started in 2011 when she was drafted
#2
overall by the Tulsa Shock (now Dallas Storm) to be, according to the New York Times, “ a cornerstone for the then-struggling franchise”.

Cambage joined the Las Vegas Aces in 2019 after being traded from Dallas. She led the team to the WNBA semifinals in both 2019 and 2021. After she became an unrestricted free agent, she signed with the Sparks.

“I had been living someone else’s dream, chasing that for a minute,” Cambage told the New York Times. “But now I’ve realized that this has always been my dream, being here in L.A. and playing here.”
