What was an innocent joke a half-century ago now causes darker laughter.

The characters from the Mr. Men and Little Miss franchises are becoming viral again this summer, due to being part of a meme that is posted everywhere.

Giorgio Angelini, a filmmaker, has followed the Pepe the Frog comic meme in a documentary. He sees something similar happening with Little Miss memes. “She’s no longer just grumpy. She’s reeling from anxiety and depression because the world is warming, democracies are crumbling and those in power seem to be more Mr. Greedy than Mr. Actionably Concerned.” he said.

According to the book series website, British author and illustrator Roger Hargreaves started his Mr. Men series in 1971 after his oldest son, Adam, asked, “What does a tickle look like?” The question inspired Hargreaves to write a book called “Mr. Tickle.” The book was the first of the Mr. Men series.

The books introduced characters whose name affects their personality. Later, Hargreaves began writing his spinoff series: Little Miss. The Little Miss series are similar to the Mr. Men series. They are about bright-colored, simply-shaped characters with different personalities. Adam Hargreaves has taken over writing the two series after his father’s death. He has added characters like Mr. Calm and Little Miss Spice Girls.

In July, one Instagram account attracted 2 million followers by posting pictures of the Hargreaves’ book covers, changing the title into things like “Little Miss Lexapro,” or “Mr. Vape Cloud”. The user gives credit to “Juulpuppy,” who started to make these memes last spring.

In April, Juulpuppy said “A lot of the memes I was making were pretty dark and I wanted to make a relatable meme that didn’t take itself too seriously” through email. Children’s books have inspired some of her other creations, like “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” and “Diary of a Wimpy Kid.”

“Visual comedy takes advantage of unexpected pairings and I love to lean into that with all the memes I make,” said Juulpuppy “This trend is so infectious because the pairings are so ridiculous and relate to so many people. Any caption can be applied to a Little Miss image, so no one has to feel like the odd one out from this trend.”

“We get to see cute imaginary versions of ourselves and laugh together at the messy nature of our flawed personalities, which I think is very genuine and sweet.” she said.
