Montero Lamar Hill, better known as Lil Nas X, is the artist that is unlikely to be seen at the BET awards this year. As seen on Wikipedia, Lil Nas X is the owner of two BET awards and has been nominated for six in two years. Yet his name is nowhere to be seen in the long list of nominees this year. On Wednesday, June 1st BET awards announced their nominees for this year’s ceremony. As stated on CNN, Lil Nas X posted his now-deleted tweet: “thank you bet awards. an outstanding zero nominations again. black excellence!”

Following this remark, the singer trolled the BET awards repeatedly on social media. He even released a song called “Late to Da Party” that features a repetitive chant: “F*** BET!” It is important to note that Lil Nas X is a queer, black man, which is (still) rare to see in high-status pop stars. Many think this had something to do with the absence of his nomination- even though he is an A-List celebrity. According to NPR, he has posted another since-deleted tweet: “I just feel like black gay ppl have to fight to be seen in this world and even when we make it to the top mfs try to pretend we’re invisible.”

We cannot forget that Lil Nas X has performed at the BET awards twice, last year’s ending with a kiss between him and one of his male background dancers. Both of his past stages at BET where greatly praised and applauded. Lil Nas X has received overwhelming amounts of support since coming out in his hit song “Old Town Road”, which has claimed many honorable records.

But with the immense amounts of support came quantities of homophobia and abhor from the media, online trolls, and celebrities. His floridness has been criticized, not only by the public, but also by queer individuals and members of the LGBTQ+ community. They accused him of being too bold and “in your face” about his sexuality, using that last BET performance as an example.

Even if the BET awards and a small portion of the media agree that Lil Nas X should not be nominated, many people and celebrities are not pleased with the situation.
