When the Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards announced their 2022 nominations earlier this month, acclaimed rapper Lil Nas X’s name was nowhere to be found. In response to the snub, the singer released a BET diss track called “Late To Da Party (F*CK BET)” three days before the awards ceremony.
The BET Awards is an American award show that airs annually from Los Angeles to celebrate African American accomplishments in fields of entertainment, including the music industry. In the past, Lil Nas X has won two BET Hip-Hop awards and received two nominations last year for “Montero (Call Me By Your Name).”
After creating some of 2021’s hottest singles and the critically acclaimed album Montero, Lil Nas X and fans alike were surprised at the lack of recognition he received at the 2022 BET Awards. “thank you bet awards. an outstanding zero nominations again. black excellence!” wrote the singer in a since-deleted tweet.
However, Lil Nas X claimed that his frustration towards the BET Awards was not because of this year’s lack of nominations, but due to suspected prejudice against him based on his race and sexuality. In another since-deleted tweet, he professed, “I just feel like black gay ppl have to fight to be seen in this world and even when we make it to the top mfs try to pretend we are invisible.”
BET has since responded to the criticism voiced by Lil Nas X, emphasizing that it does not control nomination selections for its namesake award show. The network claimed that its Voting Academy is made up of “nearly 500 entertainment professionals … No one from BET serves as a member of the Voting Academy.” BET has further expressed that it “love[s] Lil Nas X,” and that they are “committed to using all of our platforms to provide visibility and inclusion for all of the many intersections of the Black community.”
