The BET Awards are going to be presented this Sunday, but one person is
definitely not attending the awards show: Lil Nas X. Following a lack of a
nomination from BET, the displeased rapper took to Twitter to voice his
opinion. In a now-deleted tweet, he said “thank you bet awards. an
outstanding zero nominations again. black excellence!” In addition to this, he
also released a new single “Late to Da Party” where he repeatedly curses out
BET.
Taken out of context, this seems very petty to the average bystander: a pop
artist is throwing a fit because of not being nominated for an award.
However, Lil Nas X also has a valid reason for this. His anger towards the
awards show comes from his opinion, that the awards show decided to not
nominate him for an award, due to his unconcealed queer identity. He has
tweeted that “I just feel like black gay ppl have to fight to be seen in this
world and even when we make it to the top mfs try to pretend we are
invisible.” What’s also worth mentioning is that Jack Harlow, a white rapper
that worked with Lil Nas X on the song “Industry Baby,” has been nominated
for an award at the awards show. Harlow, for some reason, has been
nominated for an award originally created to honor Black people despite being white.
Lil Nas X has also been awarded 2 BET awards in the Hip-Hop category and been
nominated twice as well in the past.
The question of this is if Lil Nas X is being discriminated against because of his
queerness, or if he is overreacting to not being nominated once this year.
