Japan is currently enduring one of its most dangerous heat waves on record. On Saturday, temperatures exceeded 95 degrees, making it the 8th straight day.

The heat is making officials advise citizens to keep their air-conditioning on. Officials are even sending daily heat alerts asking citizens to stay indoors as much as possible and to use an umbrella when going outside. Yoko Koguchi, a politician, said that she canceled her daughter’s catch-ball practice because of the heat and alerts. “You can’t manage the heat just with your endurance. No matter how tough a person you are, you could lose your life,” said Kentaro Arika.

The heat is causing numerous deaths, heat stroke hospitalization, and exhaustion cases. In addition, 4,500 people were taken to the hospital recently, more than 4 times the number from last year. Many of the patients were 65 or older.

The heat is also causing electricity limitations. Since Japan relies heavily on liquefied natural gas, which is hard to stockpile, it has become more expensive due to the conflict in Ukraine. Japan uses liquefied natural gas because they are environmentally friendly. In addition, due to limited electricity whenever citizens go to work, the office lights are off.

As a result of the heat waves, many had to be very careful with going outside and staying healthy. And many have died due to it. Hopefully, no more citizens will have to suffer, and everything will go back to normal soon.
