This summer, teens from Lexington, Massachusetts, are doing something very special. They are traveling across New England as part of Circus Smirkus, a youth circus where kids and teens perform amazing acts like juggling, acrobatics, and clowning. These Lexington teens were chosen through an audition process, and now they are spending their summer performing and learning valuable lessons along the way.
Circus Smirkus is a nonprofit circus based in Vermont. It was started in 1987 by Rob Mermin, who wanted to create a place where young people could learn circus arts and important life skills. Every year, about 30 kids ages 10 to 18 are picked to join the tour. They usually come from all over the world to participate. After a few weeks of training, the team goes on a seven-week tour, performing shows in a big circus tent in towns across New England.
The Lexington teens are not just performers; they are also part of the crew. They help set up and take down the tent, organize costumes and props, clean up after shows, and travel together as a team. One performer said, “We all have to help with something, not just perform. You feel like you’re part of something bigger than just a show.” Another teen shared, “My favorite part is traveling with the group. We become like a big family.”
The circus brings joy to many people. Some audience members say it’s one of the best shows they’ve ever seen. A fan said, “It’s not just a circus, it’s a celebration of youth, talent, and teamwork.” The Lexington teens are proud to make people smile and laugh. Even though it’s a lot of hard work, they say the experience is worth it.
Being in Circus Smirkus also helps the teens grow as people. They become more confident, responsible, and creative. Some past performers have even gone on to join professional circuses. Others say the things they learned in Smirkus helped them in other things like school and life. One Lexington teen said, “It’s hard work, but when the audience is clapping and laughing, it feels amazing.”
