In recent days, Kentucky has been through a massive flood that killed 26 people. The town of Hindman got hit the worst though. However, before the flood happened, the town helped another little town called Bremen through a tornado, so Bremen came to help Hindman.

According to the mayor of Bremen, “You were here in December and helped us. Now it’s time for me to return the favor.”

This reliance on other towns for support is great, but it shows the frequency of recent natural disasters in the state of Kentucky. These disasters include an ice storm that happened last year and a flash flood in July. The governor of Kentucky says that he doesn’t know what is causing these events, but the government will be providing as much support as possible.

The disasters already have negative impacts by themselves, but combined with the fact that many of the target towns aren’t fully developed, they lead to huge setbacks. According to Jason Bailey, the executive director of the Kentucky Center for Economic Policy, a nonpartisan think tank, “To even get back to where they were is a long road.”

The chaos caused by the flood that happened a few days ago is devastating. There are houses uprooted from their foundations, crashed vehicles lying on the side of the road.

Basically, everything is strewn about. Because of the disaster, people in Kentucky are living on the edge. These citizens can barely survive. The fact that a lot of their natural resources have been taken away from them makes the matter even worse.

The strain on these local communities is immense. That’s why Judge Mosley says, “Without outside support, this would be unsurvivable. The federal government’s resources and our faith in God is the only thing that’s going to get us through this.”
