In the ongoing World Swimming Championships from June 18th—June 25th, Katie Ledecky starts off the meet with a gold medal in the 400 free.
The race started off with Katie in the lead, and McIntosh a whole body length behind her. As the race continues McIntosh catches up a little, but ultimately gets a silver medal and joins the sub-four minutes club. Ledecky wins the race and sets a new Championship Record of 3:58.15.
This is the 16th gold medal Ledecky has gotten in her career, making her the most decorated woman swimmer of all time. A silver is also exciting for the 15-year old McIntosh: after all, this is her first Olympics. Now in the 2024 Paris Olympics Ledecky has a new challenger to face, plus the current 400 meter free world record holder, Titmus.
Katie recognizes that McIntosh will be tough competition, and that she will have to work harder for gold medals.
Ledecky recently switched coaches to Anthony Nesty so that she can get better and keep up to Titmus and McIntosh. Because of this switch, Ledecky says that she feels rejuvenated.
Many think that the new challenger is extra motivation for Ledecky, but the truth is that she is always motivated to see how fast she can go in her next race. For all we know, she might be able to claim her world record title back.
