Is Skimo a Sport or a Fun Leisure Activity?

In 2026, a new sport called Skimo is on the rise. The name is short for “ski mountaineering” which basically means for a person to climb up a mountain using skis and a grippy skin. After finishing the climb, the Skimo athlete must race back down at full speed. It usually takes 2 or 3 minutes to complete a 230-feet climb undefined. This sport has become famous recently because of its appearance in the 2026 Winter Olympic Games. However, it first appeared in the 1924 Olympics as part of the “Military patrol” event which included ski mountaineering, rifle shooting, and cross country skiing (undefined). it was invented in 2007.

The sport Skimo was from originated in many different countries and a few of them are: France, Italy, Slovenia, Andorra, and Switzerland. It was first founded in 1928 and appeared on the Olympics that year as well.

Some people argue that Skimo is not a real sport and more of a fake ‘activity.’ Other people think the exact opposite and believe it is a real sport because of its appearance on the Olympic Games. In my opinion, it should and will count as a real sport, but not just because of it famously appearing on live TV shows.
Before the invention of ski transportation, like lifts, ski mountaineering was the only way to go skiing. So there are some roots in ski mountaineering. Additionally, it is good to have sports like this so that we can find more or explore different cultures and playing styles. Just like we are changing the world to be better, we can also do that to sports as well.

In conclusion, Skimo should be considered a sport because we all have our different choices in what we like and what we think is fun.
