The American bullfrog and the Brown Tree Snake, both invasive species, cost the world a total of around $16 billion worth of damage since 1986.

Writing in Scientific Reports, scientists reported the Brown Tree Snake, a mildly venomous snake was introduced by US marines to Guam, it caused the extinction of most of the island’s native bird and lizard species. It also created ecological problems by removing pollinators, causing the decline of native plant species. In total, this unassuming snake has caused $10.3 billion worth of damage. And its impact is growing.

Right now, more than two million Brown Tree Snakes live on the tiny pacific island, which is not nearly large enough to support the growing population of this invasive species. One estimate calculated as many as 20 snakes per acre on Guam! Island ecosystems, such as Guam’s, are more vulnerable to invasive species, as they have a greater threat of extinction to animals.

American bullfrogs, another invasive species from the U.S, have been wreaking havoc in Europe, South America, and Asia The pests have been able to travel so widely due the harvesting of frog legs and through the release of pets into the wild. Because of their large size (30 centimeters long, and up to 17.6 ounces) and voracious appetite, the American bullfrogs will eat virtually anything, which you can guess, can cause serious negative impacts, which may contribute to the endangerment and extinction of species.

To prevent the spread of the bullfrog, officials have been forced to install expensive frog-proof fencing around known breeding sites. Fencing off just five ponds to stop the amphibians escaping cost German officials almost $276,000 (€270,000).

American bullfrog and the brown tree snake are only two of countless invasive species. Invasive species are destroying the environment and the world billions of dollars annually. Not only that, they are damaging ecosystems and making species extinct.
