A huge valuable pink diamond was discovered in Angola, South Africa.
The owner of Lulo Alluvial Diamond Mine announced this Wednesday on its website that the
pink diamond was found in the mine. It weighs about 170 carats and it is claimed to be the
largest gemstone found in 300 years.
“This record and spectacular pink Diamond and recovered from Lulo continues to showcase
Angola as an important player on the world stage,” said Diamntino Azevedo, Angola’s Minister
of Mineral Resources.
Rough diamonds can be cut into fancy shapes and made into jewelry. Pink diamonds are
incredibly rare. It is hard to guess the value of the pink diamond until it is cut.
Fun Facts about Diamond
How old is a diamond?
Some diamonds are old, REALLY old! They are hundreds of millions, and even billions of years
old!
What color is a diamond?
Wherever you step you touch the ground with your feet, right? Do you know that hundreds of
miles below the surface lie diamonds that come with red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple,
and many other colors? The diamonds get their color from chemical elements.
Scientists are trying to study the diamond so they can find out what chemical elements it is
made of. We already know that a blue diamond gets its color from an element called boron,
and a yellow diamond gets its color from nitrogen. However, it is still unclear what pink
diamonds are made of.
